My existing training as a Restorative Movement Instructor and Third Age Coach perfectly complements my new diploma with the College of Naturopathic Medicine, enabling me to have a holistic overview as I support my clients to rock their Third Age. For many women it can be a stage of re-evaluation, and for some the best time of their lives when they look and feel fabulous.
Whether or not you are on HRT, you MUST make the right lifestyle changes to rock your Third Age. Evidence shows that we need to weight train now to prevent osteoporosis and muscle mass loss. Moderate daily exercise is also shown to lower your risk of dementia and cardiovascular disease (heart attacks are the biggest killer of women). Exercise will also make your muscles use glucose quicker thus helping prevent Type 2 Diabetes and improve your mood.
Like with puberty, when your periods did not suddenly start, there is a transition period until your periods stop. Perimenopause begins when you oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels begin to fall (and fluctuate). Your periods start to change, sometimes heavier, sometimes lighter, further apart or closer together. This transition can start as early as 40 and ends (on average) at age 51, when you officially go through the menopause, 365 days after your last ever period.
These hormonal shifts can also cause headaches, hot flushes, low mood, sleep disturbances and dry eyes/mouths/vaginas. Add to this the pressure of life (partner, kids, aging parents and work) and we feel pulled in several directions. No wonder some of you feel exhausted and overwhelmed, with no time for yourself and your health.
There are also important physiological changes happening that you cannot see…bone losing its density, muscle loss, changes in brain function, tissues losing elasticity, for example blood vessels and skin. Preparing for these changes to prevent disease later in life can also help reduce the perimenopausal symptoms you may be experiencing.
